Should I Replace My Rotors With My Brake Pads?

Automotive Blog

When you replace your brake pads, it's also often time to replace your brake rotors. Depending on this situation, this sort of brake replacement might be just the thing that your vehicle needs at the moment.

When Your Rotor is Worn Out

Find out the condition of both your brake pads and rotors. All cars and trucks come with rotors and they are expensive to replace. The rotors are considered disposable, and if you have placed a certain number of miles on them based on the manufacturer's handbook, you'll want to have them replaced. The good news is that rotors are designed to be durable and last a while.

If you examine your car's wheels, you'll notice a circular disc. This disc plays an important role in your braking system. Whenever you press down on the brakes, the brake pads grab the rotor and stop your car. This creates heat and friction, which the rotor is able to dissipate. However, all of this heat and friction can wear down the rotors.

Because rotors are exposed to constant friction, they will eventually wear out. You might experience rotor wrapping when a rotor is not circular enough. When this occurs, you might want to consider replacing your rotors. When a rotor becomes worn out, it can be more difficult to stop your car and you'll be at greater risk of an accident.

Do You Wish to Use an Aftermarket Part?

If you will be replacing your rotor, you have the choice of either using an OEM or aftermarket rotor. The OEM is designed to work with your car and you'll be able to immediately replace the existing rotor with the new rotor. However, if you purchase an aftermarket rotor, you will also need to purchase brake pads that are designed to work with the rotor. Otherwise, your brakes might not work as they should.

Do You Want Better Performance?

Another reason why you may want to replace brake rotors might be if you want your car to have better performance. Normal brake rotors are smooth and flat. However, slotted rotors can improve performance in many ways. Therefore, if it's time to replace your brake pads, you can also ask if there are slotted rotors that work with your brake pads. Regardless of the decision you make, make sure that the replacement parts are replaced on both sides of an axle rather than just one part.
